Australia Melancholia

Keelan and I took a one month journey to Australia back in September, a follow-up trip from last year’s excursion to Melbourne and Sydney.  We managed a quick four-day trip to the beautiful North island of New Zealand after arriving in Sydney first for a few days, staying in a very charming and bohemian bed and breakfast home in a funky Sydney suburb called Newtown.

The first part of our trip started in Los Angeles checking in at LAX. We got checked in at 8pm but our plane was delayed until 10am the next day. With very little information or instructions from Qantas Airlines, it took us two hours to find which shuttle to take to our assigned hotel where we were to stay for the night before taking our plane the next morning.  The hotel was in Long Beach, so far away from LAX. We only had four hours of sleep as the shuttle returning to the airport picked us up at 6am the next morning. All I have to say is that LAX operations is not very organized when an international flight is cancelled or delayed and the airlines offers to put its travelers up in surrounding hotels in the LA area.

Once we arrived in Sydney, my daughter Keelan and I spent another wonderful time in the ‘land down unda,’ as we had a great desire to return after a three month stay last year. I was able to spend more time actually participating in typical Aussie events like going to the horse races at Randwick Track; going to pubs to drink beer with beautifully handsome Aussie mates; going to Farmers Market every weekend to buy our organic vegetables; watching footie and cricket games at the city parks, and going to some fashion shows among Sydney’s fashion elite.  As much as all that was fun and different from what we would do in the ‘States,’ I could not help but observe something lacking the socio-economic mores of the Australian society.

Australia is a country that is stuck in the 1980’s, much where America was during Reagan’s time as President. It’s heavily encouraging young men to join the army. The TV advertisements are pushing military pride and recruitment while it heavily encourages young men to join the army, in the same manner as Reagan’s administration’s war machine did to push military recruits during the 80’s. Though some say that Reagan was responsible for ending the Cold War as a result of his timely media announcement to let the Berlin Wall fall.  However, not many foresaw that he was beginning to ramp up the military in anticipation of the approaching war on terror.

The Conservative government of Australia that is currently in office has eliminated such social programs as school training, mentally handicapped benefits and assistance to immigrant families. There has been an increasing government push to disavow new immigration, encouraging stricter policies to curb the flow of entering immigrants into the country. Economically, the AU government is starting to deregulate industries – shipping production out of China and India more and more. They don’t even want to usher in alternative energy projects in support of maintaining their prize and well-lobbied coal mining industry. Sadly, coal only represents 1% of AU’s GDP- hardly an economic prize for their shaky one-dimensional economy. Australia prides itself in its strong natural resources. But the government did not put energy into production and manufacturing. No wind turbines or solar panels, and very little electric car importation. I have only seen two Teslas in Sydney in the six weeks I stayed in the city.

Social welfare programs? What is Australia’s long term plan? People’s dependency on social welfare cheques which discourages work incentive. Lack of services in the food and hospitality industries is a fine example. If people are not tipped then they don’t want to go that extra mile to give good service. If the service is not there, then repeat or returning patronage is decreased – not to mention negative word of mouth and the powerful effect of social media influence on public opinions.

I found that when living among and interacting with Australians, they are insecure with themselves generally, socially awkward and lack simple etiquette. I might meet a well-educated person, well traveled and have success in their career, but they lack social graces, charm and courtesy when talking with me. At times I’ve witnessed down right rudeness when if in Europe or in the US, men in particular are usually gallant, gentlemanly and chivalrous. Not in Australia. I’ve been told that even if a man fancy’s you, they’ll still act rude to stand out. It’s a form of wooing, the rooster fluttering its feathers to get your attention. I’ve heard that recently, Australian businessmen are now hiring etiquette teachers to show them the more refined manners and social graces in order to move among their international counterparts on the same social level. I even met an Australian businessman in Las Vegas last year who spoke to me in proper English but with a faint Australian accent.  Later, after speaking to him on the phone while he was back in his native land, he reverted back to speaking in a very heavy Australian draw. He told me that he spoke proper English when he travels internationally for his business meetings, but that he’ll speak his typical Aussie accent when back at home. As a fact, a great many of these men have not acquired these social graces from their upbringing, nor from their education.

No matter what my misgivings are about Australian people, I still think that they are the most humorous, fun-loving and charitable people in the world. I love Australia and I love their culture, their food, the atmosphere and city sites. And I particularly love their accents. It’s a country I could see myself retiring to later when I am ready to settle down.

Pics of My Recent Trip to Australia & New Zealand

Just got back to the US from a whirlwind trip to Sydney, Australia. Keelan and I also took a quick trip to Wellington, New Zealand, caravaning around the North Island of NZ for the first time just to get a feel for the country. And the feeling was amazing there! Kiwi's are the friendliest people in the world and their country is probably the most beautiful in the world.

Though we went to Melbourne, Newcastle and Sydney last year hoping to find some business opportunities, we came home with only videos, memories, and credit card bills. We returned to Sydney this Fall with no expectations and came back with even better memories, opportunities, gained great connections and made wonderful friends. And of course, we ate tons of good Aussie food. Sydney is a city we love and will continue to visit on a regular basis.

A more detailed account of my Aussie experience and observations will follow soon.

Kiki Mode @sfoutsidelands Music Festival 2015

Happiness is going to the Outside Lands Music Festival in San Francisco with your daughter and having the time of your life. Yes, that's what I did this month and I can't believe that at my old age of 50 something, that I can actually rock it and rave it with all the rest of the young ones at the festival.

Keelan and I decided to invest in VIP tickets after watching past Outside Lands videos that showed that there was no where to sit in general admission areas. I can't stand and dance for hours at a time, and I certainly won't sit on the dirty California dry grass where the stages were erected. The VIP section was the right choice with its plush and ritzy decor, tents to shield us from the sun, plenty of bars to get yourself tipsy all day, and Outside Lands favored foodie booths to indulge yourself in expensive tapas-sized meals. Spending several hundred dollars daily on food and drink is easily done in the VIP section of Outside Lands. So be prepared if you decide to go that route for a music festival. All-in-all, everything tasted good, so no complaints in that department.

I have not been at a music festival as big as this one in my life. I was blown away by the hordes of people who came. All I was thinking when I first arrived on the first day of the festival was how much money those promoters were making on this venture. I thought, 'I really missed my calling by not going into promoting music bands at festivals.' And what great music we did indeed dance to and filmed with our YouTube Live channel.

My favorite musical gig was Billy Idol. Yes, I know....a blast from the past. But the Rebel of Rock took me back to my young days when I lived in San Francisco working my first job in retail at Union Square. Those were the good ole days - Echo Beach and IBeam in Haight Ashbury.

Another group that was really impressive in live concert during Friday's lineup were Indie band Glass Animals who performed at the Sutro stage. They played our favorites along with their big hit 'Gooey' which all sounded amazing. After that was Chet Faker on the same stage and I absolutely loved his DJ mixes. Going from Porter Robinson's act at the Twin Peaks stage to Mumford and Sons who performed at the Land's End stage (snooze), we caught  D'Angelo from a distance. We didn't stay for the whole set as he had too many people standing at his stage area for us to appreciate his performance. I regretted this because I heard D'Angelo was one of the best in the festival, besides Leon Bridges who we also missed, thanks to unreliable Muni bus operators who gave us the wrong bus info to Golden Gate Park which made us really late to Outside Lands opening day. Moving on....other bands that we liked were the sister act First Aid Kit, Wilco and we caught the end of George Ezra's set at the Sutro stage.

Going back to Saturday's playlist, Keelan and I were able to catch Unknown Mortal Orchestra at the Twin Peaks stage,  Tame Impala which was great to watch wonderfully talented Aussie musicians, and finally the closing band was Black Keys. The crowd went crazy when they came on stage. Keelan was transported to another dimension while she took in the Black Keys tunes. She was in a state of bliss 'til the end of their set, and then lights out, bars closed, and all festival goers were quickly whisked out of one exit gate in hoards. San Francisco street life reality shock - no organized transportation from Golden Gate Park. Nightmare! Another gripe that I have that could have made things smoother - now here's my pampered self coming out - why wasn't there a VIP section at the Sutro stage?!!!

Oh well, Saturday was a less hectic day anyway because we arrived earlier to the Golden Gate Park to eat yummy Indian food at Curry Up truck, and drink wine at the cashless Winelands tent where your credit card is charged and programmed into your festival wrist band. You can purchase your wine using your band, with dozens of Napa Valley wineries to choose from.  That was fun yet strange as I felt I was in the Justin Timberlake movie 'Timed Out' where all your cash is programmed into a chip in your arm. Unfortunately, in the movie when you run out of cash in your chip, you die. At Outside Lands Winelands, when you run out of money on your wrist band, you run out of wine, and then you have to replenish your band with a credit card. Still freaky....

We ended up not going to the third day of Outside Lands because we were just plain exhausted from the first two days. My feet were killing me, as I chose to wear fashionable 2 inch boots each day. I may have been in pain at the end of each concert day, but I did look good - in Kiki Mode fashions - in my vain opinion. Keelan and I were both styled in Kiki Mode Fashions during both days at the San Francisco festival. We did miss Elton John and two of my favorites, Hot Chip and Odesza. But Keelan and I will catch Odesza live in Wellington, New Zealand next month. Yeah!

We'll do Outside Lands again next year because it was too much fun. But we'll definitely hire a car to drop us off to the festival and pick us up after the festival - no matter how much it costs. We were never able to get on a Muni bus after each festival night, nor could we find taxis waiting or driving by the park exit. Thank you UBER!
