Hi there, welcome to ‘Mo’s Baby Boomer Vlog.’ I’m Mo and I’m
blogging to let you know that I’ve started a video blog about “Me Generation”
issues, stories, lifestyle, mixed with some humor and stuff that pertains to
individuals who were born from the time after WWII until the early 60’s. Yes, I
am aging myself by admitting when I was born. But…my age is not an issue here. As
some people say, age is just a number. It’s the birth certificate, passport and
drivers’ license that reveals our age. If we didn’t have ID’s, who would give a
damn? Oops, that’s right- the GOP gives a damn – but not for our age. Oh sorry.
I don’t want to get into too much politics or religion in my vlogs. Those
subjects are personal, they’re divisive and they’re just not that fun to talk
about anymore, unless it’s in a humorous manner.
Mo’s Black Baby Boomer Vlog is my mid-life crisis.
For the first time since I was a young girl, I feel
creatively rejuvenated. Since I started working in the corporate world at age
21, I gave up my piano lessons at that time. I gave up creating music and
writing in my journal – to chase the American dream of making money, being
successful and having it all. I first got married at age 25, than married a
second time at age 35, than again at age 45 and divorced all three husbands
after short marriages. I helped those three husbands pursue their dreams while
I worked to support them. When each of them started to tell me what to do and
how to be, what to say and basically start to control my life, I left them
without a fight or a discussion. I didn’t even fight for alimony or property
split. I walked out the door and didn’t look back.
Even my long term, communal relationships led to breakups
when those men thought it was their duty to keep me in check, controlling my
life and thus trying to suppress my sense of being ‘me.’ All men were of baby
boomer age, like myself. And all of my men shared that all male trait of the
old fashioned traditional behavior – I Tarzan, you Jane mentality. All of these
men lorded over me that ‘if I stepped out of line, in other words, if I
displeased them, I could be easily replaced.’ And yes, I was guilty in
displeasing them. I was simply trying to be my creatively expressive, humorous,
playful, intelligent, passionate, optimistic, sensual, and charitable self. One
of my husbands told me that ‘there will only be one artist in this house’ when
I exhibit a painting that I did in my own gallery. My husband was not referring
to me as the artist.
Now, at age 56, I’m putting energy into myself and into my
daughter’s creative endeavors. What’s very important and close to my heart is
that I’ll share the dynamics of my relationship with Keelan. I am amazed at how
much I learn from her and how much she helps keep me current, healthy and yes,
young at heart, spirit and in mind.
Anyway, I will vlog about economics, social events, the
entertainment industry’s treatment of the elderly, and some psychological mumbo
jumbo at times – you know – the kitchen counter conversation stuff, with a nice
cocktail in hand. Yeah, I’ll talk about what I like to do, like going to music
festivals; I like going out dancing, dancing to Tango, and catching concerts
except I don’t like clubbing it. I listen to Indie groups and dubstep – hell, I
even flew to Wellington, NZ last year to catch Odessa in concert. Keelan and I even
plan to brave it at Burning Man in August. So I don’t consider myself a boring
senior citizen by any stretch of the imagination. In my YouTube vlog I will
talk about health - like the inevitable aches and pains that come with getting
old so my doctor tells me. Oooooh, I’ll also talk about how sex can play an
even more sensual and central role than it did when we were younger.
I want to vlog about fashion and culture, diet and epicurean
tastes, and my interest in travel. I will talk about the environment and how I
see our generation’s lethargy in wanting to keep the planet clean, as well as
my obsession with animal treatment and their rights as living beings that
should not be exploited. Further, my
vlog will touch on how my vegan lifestyle is motivated by my views on animal
cruelty and exploitation.
I’ve seen a lot of blogs, recent movies and growing old
media articles written by, for and about baby boomers. But I have not seen much
video blogs done about us senior citizen, AARP, mature, old, whatever people
call us these days and whatever social category we fit into now. I think that
there is some room for discussion about some of the hip and interesting things
about baby boomer lives. There’s also room for us baby boomers to not fight the
technology phenomena and learn how to best utilize social media together with
smart devices for our entertainment and new retirement careers.
So catch my vlogs on YouTube and Vimeo under Kikimode
channel, and also catch my vines on Vine – Vodwall. I also invite you to watch
some live videos that I’ll film from time-to-time of everyday things, events
that baby boomers are into or what makes them tick.
Peace out and ‘always love.’
